How to Plan a Vegetable Garden: A Simple Planner

A step-by-step vegetable garden planner: pick crops, group companions, map beds and schedule by frost date.

Updated Oct 2026 · 2 min read · Extension-sourced

  1. Choose crops you eat.

    Start with 6–10.

  2. Find your frost date

Sort crops into cool-season and warm-season.

  3. Group companions

Use the checker and keep pairs sources list as incompatible (beans and onions, tomatoes and potatoes) in separate beds.

  4. Map beds

Put tall crops (corn, trellised tomatoes) on the north side so they don't shade short ones.

  5. Schedule

Plan seed starting and planting with the calendar.

  6. Plan succession sowings

Sow lettuce, radish and beans every 2–3 weeks.

  7. Rotate families

Move crop families each year to reduce soil-borne disease.
